giorni barocchi - Modica is
Modica is one of the most antique urban
centres of Sicily. Nearly completely destroyed by the earthquake of 1693,
it preserves little evidence of the former city, therefore what makes
Modica so unique and fascinating today, is its subsequent baroque
look which characterizes the urban layout and the ancient city
centre.
Included by Unesco in 2002 amongst the cities to be protected
as world heritage for humanity together with other eight towns of South-Eastern
Sicily (Caltagirone, Militello, Val di Catania, Catania, Noto,
Palazzolo Acreide, Ragusa Ibla and Scicli), it represents the
top and final flowering of baroque art in Europe.
Modica is also situated in a wider context of indisputable artistic interest
to which you can add the advantage of the proximity to the sea (Sampieri,
Marina di Modica, Marina di Ragusa, Pozzallo, Capo Passero),
and the possibility of visiting the close and important archaeological
sites of Cava Ispica, the ruins of Camarina, Piazza Armerina and the art
cities of Scicli, Ragusa, Noto, Palazzolo Acreide, Donnafugata, Caltagirone,
Siracusa.
